However, there are still free, everyday steps anyone can take to protect their mental health. Here is a list Stop Stigma Sacramento has created of free ways you can practice self-care in your daily routine to improve your mental health.
- Prioritize getting six or more hours of high-quality sleep a night
- Cut back on social media use when you feel it causing stress
- When feeling lonely or stressed, check in with loved ones who can support you
- Move your body in a way that feels good to you and get outside when possible
- Make time to find relaxing activities
- Practice gratitude –finding even three things a day you are grateful for can flip your entire mindset.
- Staying hydrated and getting key nutrients from a balanced diet can improve your energy, mood and over-all well-being
No matter your financial situation, you should be able to receive care or assistance to improve your mental wellbeing and free and low-cost resources can make huge positive impact. One Sacramento County resident who has lived through recovery from substance abuse and being unhoused said, “having low barrier resources … help[ed] provide [me] emotional support when finances and insurance were not able to.”
